Porcine Streptococcus suis strains as potential sources of infections in humans: an underdiagnosed problem in North America?
نویسنده
چکیده
S treptococcus suis is a gram-positive coccus, possessing cell wall antigenic determinants related to Lancefield group D, although it is genetically unrelated to other members of this group, such as enterococci. Streptococcus suis is a capsulated bacterium, with the composition of the capsule defining the serotype. There are presently 35 capsular types or serotypes. The original classification of S suis into Lancefield groups R, S, and T is erroneous, obsolete, and should be avoided. Strains of S suis originally defined as Lancefield groups R, S, and T correspond to capsular types 2, 1, and 15, respectively.1

Lineage and Virulence of Streptococcus suis Serotype 2 Isolates from North America
We performed multilocus sequence typing of 64 North American Streptococcus suis serotype 2 porcine isolates. Strains were sequence type (ST) 28 (51%), ST25 (44%), and ST1 (5%). We identified nonrandom associations between STs and expression of the virulence markers suilysin (SLY), muramidase-relased protein (MRP), and extracellular factor (EF). Expression of pili encoded by the srtF and srtG pi...
متن کاملHuman Case of Streptococcus suis Disease, Ontario, Canada
We report a case of Streptococcus suis human disease in Ontario, Canada, caused by a serotype 2 strain genotypically similar to those commonly isolated from pigs in North America. Initially, the isolate was misidentified as a viridans group Streptococcus. Human S. suis infections may be underdiagnosed in North America.

Infections caused by Streptococcus suis are considered a global problem in the swine industry. In this animal species, S. suis is associated with septicemia, meningitis, endocarditis, arthritis and, occasionally, other infections. Moreover, it is an agent of zoonosis that afflicts people in close contact with infected pigs or pork-derived products. Although sporadic cases of S. suis infection i...

متن کاملStreptococcus suis serotype 2 strains isolated in Argentina (South America) are different from those recovered in North America and present a higher risk for humans
INTRODUCTION Streptococcus suis serotype 2 is an important swine pathogen and emerging zoonotic agent causing meningitis and septicemia/septic shock. Strains are usually virulent (Eurasia) or of intermediate/low virulence (North America). Very few data regarding human and swine isolates from South America are available. CASE PRESENTATION Seventeen new human S. suis cases in Argentina (16 sero...
